Simon Fraser University
Senior Lecturer

I'm Joel, a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, but currently on sabbatical in the Department of Second Language Studies at the University at Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.

I am really interested in writing as writing, if that makes any sense. My work has appeared in publications including the Journal of Second Language Writing, Across the Disciplines, Asian Englishes, Composition Studies, the Journal of English for Research Publication Purposes, and English Today.

I am former co-editor (2010-2015, with Sibo Chen) of the journal Discourse and Writing/Rédactologie, Canada's flagship journal of writing studies, current vice president and program chair of CASDW, and its incoming president as of June 1. I'm also the author of Dancing about Architecture is a Reasonable Thing to Do (Cascade Books, 2022), about the meaning and purpose of music criticism.

Honestly though, I'm just somebody who thinks writing is the most important thing in the world, and I always want to learn more about it.
